- Sperm: Spermatozoa, or sperm cells, are the male reproductive cells responsible for fertilizing a female egg. They make up a small percentage of the total volume of semen.
- Seminal Vesicle Fluid: The seminal vesicles contribute a significant portion of the seminal fluid. This fluid contains nutrients, such as fructose, which provide energy to the sperm, enabling them to survive and swim through the female reproductive tract.
- Prostate Gland Fluid: The prostate gland contributes an alkaline fluid to semen. This fluid helps to neutralize the acidic environment of the vagina, creating a more favorable environment for sperm survival and motility.
- Cowper's Gland (Bulbourethral Gland) Secretions: These small glands near the urethra produce a clear, mucus-like fluid that acts as a lubricant for the urethra and the tip of the penis during sexual arousal.
Semen plays a crucial role in sexual reproduction, as it serves as a medium for transporting sperm from the male to the female reproductive system. Upon ejaculation during sexual intercourse, sperm are deposited in the female's vagina, and their journey begins towards the cervix, uterus, where fertilization can occur if the timing is right.
How much semen does the testicle produce per day?
- The production of semen involves several glands in the male reproductive system, not just the testicles. The testicles primarily produce sperm cells, which are only a small part of the total volume of semen. The majority of semen volume is contributed by the seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and Cowper's glands.

What happens to semen that did not come down?
Semen that has not been ejaculated is typically reabsorbed by the body. The body has a natural process to manage unused semen and prevent its accumulation. This process is called "sperm reabsorption" or "seminal reabsorption."
- When the testes produce sperm, they are continuously released into the epididymis, a coiled tube located on the back of each testicle. The epididymis serves as a storage site for sperm maturation and allows them to gain the ability to swim and fertilize an egg. If the sperm are not ejaculated through sexual activity or nocturnal emissions (commonly known as "wet dreams"), they are eventually reabsorbed by the body.
